Scientists have found that type 2 insulin (IGF-II) growth factor reinforces memory and prevents forgetfulness in animal models.

The result of the international research study was developed at the Mount Sinai Hospital Medical School in New York.

The study describes the role played by IGF-II in the processes of consolidation of long-term memory.

"Through microarray studies (gene identification) we see that the gene that codes this protein increases in the brain of rats exposed to a learning session," said Ana Garcia-Osta of the University of Navarra, one of the authors of the study.

"On administering IGF-II locally into the hypocampus (the part of the brain where memory is acquired and consolidated) of these animals, we observe that the animal undergoes reinforcement of memory and prevention of forgetfulness," she said.

Also, the blocking of the expression of the hypocampus IGF-II gene impedes the formation of new memories, showing that that it is an essential molecule for memory to form and be consolidated.

"We believe that the IGF-II could be a new target for the design of therapies which enhance the cognitive function," Garcia-Osta added.

The study was published in the latest issue of Nature .

London, May 16 (ANI): Soon, it will cost just 435 pounds to keep tab on your ageing process. Scientists have developed a blood test, which can show the speed of ageing and give an estimate of how long a person is going to live.

The test results may be vital to life-insurance companies offering medical cover that depends on a person's lifetime risk of falling seriously ill or dying prematurely.

The controversial blood test is to go on sale to the general public in Britain later this year.

The test has been designed to measure vital structures on the tips of a person's chromosomes called telomeres, which scientists believe are one of the most important and accurate indicators of the speed at which a person is ageing.

According to scientists, the test will be able to tell whether a person's "biological age", as measured by the length of their telomeres is older or younger than their actual chronological age.

"We know that people who are born with shorter telomeres than normal also have a shorter lifespan. We know that shorter telomeres can cause a shorter lifespan," the Independent quoted Maria Blasco, of the Spanish National Cancer Research Centre in Madrid as saying.

"But we don't know whether longer telomeres are going to give you a longer lifespan. That's not really known in humans," she added.

Scientists are hopeful that the test could prove to be a breakthrough in satiating the curiosity of the people regarding their mortality, who can accordingly, plan their life.

However, scientists do not yet believe that the test predictions can be narrowed down to calculate the exact number of months and years a person has yet to live. (ANI)

Exercise While Sitting at Your Computer


Its a problem for everyone, after the computer invaded our lives we spent lot of time working on them. For most office workers, being glued to their desks while typing away at their computers for an average of 10 hours a day is already a part of their normal routine.

However, sitting at the computer all day may not exactly be good for the body, as it can bring about backaches due to poor posture and eye strain, among other effects.On the other hand, being in a desk job does not have to be an ordeal for your health.

If you are one of those people who have to be at a desk all day long, there are some simple steps that you can follow in order to improve your posture and keep your health in check.

Steps

1. Observe the proper sitting posture in a good chair that is designed for desk work. Your back should be straight, your shoulders back, and the top of your monitor should be level with your eyes. If you have to look down or up, then you need to adjust the height of your screen. Also, make sure that your wrists do not lie on the keyboard or on the mouse pad (unless you have a pad with a wrist rest). This will help prevent Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Keep your legs bent at the knees so that the knees are only slightly higher than your hips. Feet should be flat on the floor or on a step stool of some sort.

2. Do simple stretching exercises. Stretch your arms, legs, neck and torso while sitting. This will help prevent you from feeling stiff.


* Neck: To stretch your neck, slowly flex your head forward/backward, side to side and look right and left. This can be done almost anytime to lessen tension and strain. Never roll your head around your neck. This could cause damage to the joints of the neck.
* Shoulders: Roll your shoulders forward around 10 times, then backward. This helps release the tension off your shoulders.
* Arms and Shoulders: A good stretch for your arms and shoulders is to brace your hands on the edge your desk, each about a shoulder width away from your body. Twist your hands in so they point toward your body and lean forward, hunching your shoulders. Take this a step further and push your shoulders and elbows closer to the desk.
* Wrists: Roll your wrists regularly, around every hour or so. Roll the wrists 10 times clockwise, then 10 times counterclockwise. This will help prevent Carpal Tunnel Syndrome if you spend a lot of time typing.
* Ankles: Roll your ankles regularly. As with your wrists, roll the ankles in a clockwise motion 3 times, then counterclockwise. This helps improve blood circulation, and prevents that tingling feeling you can get when blood circulation is cut off, also known as "Pins and Needles".
* Chest: Notice if you tend to hunch in front of the keyboard. To counter that, perform the following exercise:

Open your arms wide as if you are going to hug someone, rotate your wrists externally (thumbs going up and back) and pull your shoulders back. This stretch is moving your body the opposite way to being hunched and you should feel a good stretch across your upper chest.
* Abdomen: Contract your abdominal and gluteal muscles, hold them there for a few seconds, then release. Repeat this for every few minutes all day long while you are working at your desk. You can also perform Kegels (pelvic floor exercises) while sitting.
* Calves: Stretch your calves. While sitting, lift up your legs on the balls of your feet and set them down. Repeat until your legs are comfortably tired. Repeat after about 10 minutes later, and continue doing this routine for about an hour or so. This will exercise your calves, and will help prevent blood clots from developing in your legs. Blood clots are very common among middle-aged computer users.
3. Stand up every half hour to walk around a bit. This will ensure continuous blood circulation in your arms and legs, and will keep them from getting too strained. Take walks to the water station to refill your glass. If you can afford to take longer breaks, take a short walk outside your building, and use the stairs instead of the elevator to go down. Aside from giving your legs and heart a good workout, you would be able to take in fresh air as well.

4. Give your eyes a break from focusing on your screen. Every 30 minutes or so, shift your focus from the computer screen and scan around other subjects in the room, such as a window, clock, desk, or door. This helps promote eye movement and lessens chances of eye irritation and headaches. Another technique to relax your eyes would be to rub your hands together, then place your cupped hands over your eyes.

5. Take advantage of the downtime created by rebooting or large file downloads. Get up and take short walks around your floor. If you can afford to do it and do not have many co-workers around who would be bothered, try something more ambitious such as doing a few push-ups, sit-ups, and/or jumping jacks.

6. Do exercises with the help of a few tools. Acquire a hand gripper. They are cheap, small and light. When you have to read something either on the screen or on paper, you probably won’t be needing to use your hands very often, so use this opportunity squeeze your gripper.

It is an excellent forearm workout. Acquire an elastic band (also cheap, small and light) and use it to do the actions mentioned above (i.e., when stretching your arms, do it by pulling apart the elastic band). This will stretch and work the muscles slightly.Invest in a large size stability ball or stability ball-style desk chair, and sit on it with back straight and abs firm.

You burn calories stabilizing your core and body on the ball. While an actual stability ball is more effective, the chair is a more viable option to use in an office environment. While sitting or talking on the phone, you can bounce or do basic toning exercises. Use the actual ball form in moderation when typing, as this is probably not the most supportive seating to prevent carpal tunnel and tendinitis.

7. Take a few deep breaths. To work your abdominal muscles, hold your stomach for a few seconds when breathing in, then release when breathing out. If possible, get some fresh air in your lungs by taking a walk outside, as mentioned in a previous step.

8. Have a bottle of water by your side and make a habit of drinking some every half hour. If you do this consistently you will begin to feel more alert. Take trips to your water refilling station to refill your jug or glass, so that you can also walk around and exercise your legs at the same time.

Strengthen your Heart


Padma Shri and Dr B C Roy National Awardee Dr K K Aggarwal, President, Heart Care Foundation of India of India advised people to take care of their heart. He gave few tips to do so.

Follow Dr. KK Aggarwal's 'Formula of 80' i.e. keep your pulse rate, lower blood pressure, fasting sugar, abdominal circumference and bad cholesterol levels all below 80. To achieve these, walk 80 minutes a day with a speed of 80 steps per minute; eat less - not more than 80 gm or 80 ml of caloric food; do 80 cycles of pranayams in a day, avoid alcohol and if one does drink, do not consume more than 80 ml in a day.

After the age of 30, get an annual medical checkup done with exercise treadmill test every three years.

Eat in moderation and take a variety of food consisting of seven colours and six tastes.

Avoid using trans fats. Trans fats increase bad cholesterol and reduce good cholesterol. Hydrogenated oil is an example of trans fat.

Avoid three 'whites' in your diet - white maida (refined flour0, white sugar and white rice - or consume only in minimum amounts. They are known to cause abdominal obesity, which is a risk factor for heart diseases.

Do not smoke or consume tobacco in any form as it increases the chances of heart attack, paralysis and erectile dysfunction.

Do not ignore any symptom, which is unusual, unexplained and is detected for the very first time.

Do not ignore any chest pain, burning or discomfort in the centre of the chest which is diffuse in nature and lasts for more than 30 seconds.

If a heart attack is suspected, then one should chew 300 mg of water-soluble aspirin and immediately rush to the nearest heart hospital.

All heart patients should remember that sudden cardiac death is reversible in the first 10 minutes. For this, remember Dr. KK Aggarwal's 'Formula of 10' i.e. within 10 minutes of death, for the next 10 minutes, one should compress the chest with a speed of 10 x 10 = 100 per minute. This can revive more than 75% of the patients.

Heart patients too can lead a normal physical, mental and sexual life.

Presence of heart blockages in the heart does not mean that a person requires angioplasty or surgery. The indication for them is failure of adequate medical treatment to provide the wanted risk-free quality of life.

Following traditional Indian customs and rituals can help reduce chances of heart attack. The weekly fast of not consuming cereals can be adopted by all of us to reduce risk of metabolic syndrome, which develops due to insulin resistance because of eating a carbohydrate-rich diet, especially one that contains refined carbohydrates, on a daily basis.

Definition

Hypochondriasis can occur at any age, but it tends to start during adolescence. Men and women are equally affected by it. Consultant physician Monica Goel says, "Hypochondriasis is a disorder where one believes that he/she is experiencing medical illness, either real or imagined. They also believe that their symptoms they can be attributed to serious medical ailments.

Consultant psychiatrist Vasant Mundra adds, "In hypochondriasis, a person is preoccupied with various bodily symptoms, which he believes are an indicator of a serious disease. The patient typically goes to many doctors, and has a huge medical file, with almost every known investigation done, and that too repeatedly. He/she may be temporarily convinced when doctors reassure them, but their fears resurface in a short while.

Symptoms

Mundra says that the symptoms of hypochondriasis can disrupt the patient's life, as well as that of his family. They may stop working, may want to change their residential area as it is damp, polluted or dusty. They spend huge amounts of money on doctors, and often limit their diets according to their own interpretations of what is cold or hot, or what causes acidity or gas. Often this can lead to real nutritional deficiencies.

The symptoms of hypochondriasis usually follow a familiar pattern. The sufferer will develop an overpowering fear of a particular illness or illnesses. Often the fear is out of proportion with the illness based on non-existent symptoms. The opinions of physicians and other medical experts often do not help in controlling the fear, says Goel.

Causes

There are a number of reasons as to why a person might develop hypochondriasis.

Clinical psychologist Seema Hingorrany cites the following causes:

- Having learned apparent benefits of being sick, such as receiving attention.

- Hypochondriasis may occur in an individual who had a childhood illness or had a sibling with a childhood illness.

- Hypochondriasis may develop from or be a sign of one of other disorders such as anxiety or obsessive compulsive disorder.

- This condition has often been linked to underlying emotional issues such as a preoccupation with death.

- Physical or sexual abuse.

- Poor ability to express emotions.

Effect

The worries of hypochondriacs can have severe ramifications in daily life. Hingorrany mentions that they seek out reassurance from family, friends, or health care providers on a regular basis. Since they are very pessimistic in their approach towards life, they generally don't enjoy socialising. Personality-wise, hypochondriasis should not be a way of seeking attention from others by pretending to be sick.

Repeated absenteeism from work often results in financial difficulties and interpersonal problems. Many patients are concerned that they have a certain specific disease, such as AIDS, cancer, paralysis, or heart disease. In others, there is a conviction that the symptoms were caused by some food, medicine or event, and they often blame a certain person for their condition. The internet has led to a huge increase in hypochondriasis.


Access to medical information has caused even the otherwise healthy to suddenly become aware of trivial bodily symptoms, and arrive at alarming diagnosis. They are also then scared of taking treatment for genuine illnesses as they have read up the side effects of medication.

Coping

Since hypochondriacs spend a great a deal of their time unnecessarily worrying about their health, they need to overcome this pattern of behaviour. Goel suggests that firstly develop a close trusting relationship with your physician in which one feels comfortable discussing your concerns and trust their evaluation of your condition. Seek help through cognitive behavioural therapy from psychiatrist or a psychologist. Exercise, as it's not just good for your health, but it also makes you feel better about yourself.

How to preserve your memory

Scientists are now one step closer to finding novel approaches to help enhance learning and treat patients with memory problems and learning disabilities.

A team at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) has provided fundamental new insights into the way our brain copes with the challenge of learning multiple skills and making multiple memories.

Their findings suggest that specific brain areas actively orchestrate competition between memories, and that by disrupting targeted brain areas through transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), you can preserve memory -- and prevent forgetting.

Edwin Robertson, MD, DPhil, an Associate Professor of Neurology at Harvard Medical School and BIDMC, together with BIDMC neurologist and coauthor Daniel Cohen, MD, studied a group of 120 college-age students who performed two concurrent memory tests.

The first involved a finger-tapping motor skills task, the second a declarative memory task in which participants memorized a series of words.

In the second part of the study, Robertson and Cohen administered TMS following the initial testing. TMS is a noninvasive technique that uses a magnetic simulator to generate a magnetic field that can create a flow of current in the brain.

In this case, the researchers targeted two specific brain regions, the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and the primary motor cortex.

They discovered that by applying TMS to specific brain areas, they were able to reduce the interference and competition between the motor skill and word-list tasks and both memories remained intact.

The study has been published in the journal Nature Neuroscience.
